Ebonyi: Family Rendered Homeless By Youths Over Witchcraft AllegationsJune 12 has become a heartbreaking date for the family of Mr. John Ekpono of Agharoza, Iboko, in the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The incident was triggered by a local cleric’s revelation, which claimed that Mr. Ekpono and others were behind the community’s misfortunes. Convinced by this accusation, some youths went on a rampage, setting fire to Ekpono’s properties and accusing him of evil practices.

Speaking with DAILY POST, Mr. Chijioke Ekpono, the victim’s son, recounted their ordeal and revealed that further attacks were being planned against his family. He explained that a village crusade led to the violent outbreak after the cleric accused his father of malevolent deeds. Security operatives, dispatched by the Izzi Local Government Chairman to disrupt the unauthorized crusade, exacerbated tensions.

Chijioke stated that the crusade organizers blamed his family for the security intervention, resulting in the destruction of their homes and farmlands. “They destroyed everything my father worked for. Our houses, farmlands, and numerous other belongings were burnt. We pray for God’s rescue,” he lamented.

Izzi Local Government Area Chairman, Barrister Stephen Emenike Nwakpu, confirmed the incident in a phone conversation with DAILY POST, condemning the acts as barbaric. He reported that at least 30 individuals involved in the arson had been arrested, arraigned, and detained, with more arrests expected.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Ebonyi State Command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, also confirmed the incident and stated that investigations were ongoing to apprehend those still at large.

Additionally, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Ebonyi State has intervened, addressing the severe human rights abuses. NHRC State Coordinator Mr. Christopher Okorie expressed dismay over the reliance on superstitions and unfounded revelations to persecute innocent people. He assured that the commission is committed to ensuring justice, to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Prominent political figures Peter Obi (Presidential Candidate, Nigeria Democratic Congress – NDC) and Dele Momodu (Chieftain, African Democratic Congress – ADC) have renewed their demands for the release of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who has been in custody since February.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi’s Position

Idris Zekeri, media aide to former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, stated that Obi has consistently advocated for due process regarding any allegations against El-Rufai. Speaking with Saturday Punch, Zekeri emphasized that if there is a case against the former governor, it should be properly established in court rather than resorting to extended, unlawful detention.

“Peter Obi has been one of the most vocal since the issue of El-Rufai’s ordeal started. We strongly believe that no Nigerian should be suffering extended detention without a charge and without his rights being respected,” Zekeri said.

El-Rufai remains in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) amidst ongoing investigations and court proceedings. The Federal High Court in Abuja has reserved judgment for October 26 on a no-case submission in a separate matter involving El-Rufai, while a fundamental rights suit regarding his detention is scheduled for hearing on October 27.

Dele Momodu’s Position

Dele Momodu, speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, criticized the continued detention, arguing that El-Rufai’s critical role in the emergence of President Bola Tinubu’s administration should be acknowledged.

“Without former President Muhammad Buhari, Aisha Buhari, and Nasir El-Rufai, I am not sure President Tinubu will be in office today,” Momodu asserted.

Momodu further defended El-Rufai against allegations of divisive politics, suggesting that these criticisms are politically motivated. He described El-Rufai as a formidable political figure in the North-West, whose current predicament stems from falling out of favor with the government.

“He has become a prisoner of conscience. I have no doubt in my mind that if he were still in the good book of the government, he would not go through this ordeal,” Momodu concluded.
