Nigeria Has Made Democracy Expensive, Calls For Budget Review – ObanikoroFormer Minister of State for Defence, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, has called for a review of the budget of the Senate and House of Representatives as a strategy to reduce the cost of governance in Nigeria.

Obanikoro expressed his concern that democracy has become overly expensive, urging the government to adopt measures to make the budget of the National Assembly more transparent.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He highlighted the contrast with the United States, stating, “In America they don’t provide accommodation for lawmakers, they fend for themselves when it comes to that, they live basically on salary and very small fringe benefits. Democracy doesn’t have to be this expensive, that is one thing we don’t get right.”

Obanikoro argued that increased transparency in the National Assembly’s budget allocation could mitigate calls for a switch to a parliamentary system of government. He emphasized the need for public visibility into budgetary allocations to lawmakers, suggesting that this transparency would lead to a more cost-effective governance structure.

“If the budget is more transparent, and people can go online and see what is allocated to every member of the National Assembly and can also input into the process, I do believe that will make the process or the institution less expensive,” he stated.

Regarding proposals to streamline Nigeria’s legislative framework, Obanikoro proposed, “We cut the budget size of the National Assembly to a reasonable level that an average Nigerian can live with.”

Obanikoro’s remarks underscored his belief that reducing unnecessary budgetary provisions would enhance public trust and accountability in the governance system.
