June 12: Traces Of Military Rule Persist In Nigeria’s Democracy – IYCA faction of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide expressed concerns on Wednesday about what it perceives as “traces of military rule” within Nigeria’s democratic system.

The group also warned President Bola Tinubu against the continuous militarization of democratic governance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The IYC acknowledged June 12, 1993, as a historic day for Nigeria, marking one of the freest and fairest elections. However, it lamented the growing militarization of the country’s democracy as troubling.

Comrade Bedford Berefa, the factional national spokesman of the IYC, argued that despite several years of democratic rule, elements of military governance persist. He cited the executive arm’s use of absolute power to suppress dissenting voices.

“Our democracy has been militarized with no consideration for the people,” Berefa stated. “The power of the people has been undermined; they are no longer the center of government. Manipulations and intimidation of the people have become the order of the day.”

Berefa highlighted widespread human rights violations, particularly in the Ijaw nation and the Niger Delta region. He mentioned the recent military operations in the Igbomotoru community in Bayelsa State as a significant example.

“Communities are constantly ransacked by the military, and harmless people are being killed without justice in an acclaimed practicing democracy. No investigations are done to protect the rights of the people,” he said. “This is a deliberate practice to constantly enslave our people, akin to colonial democracy using poverty as an atomic weapon.”

Berefa criticized the deployment of military forces during democratic elections, describing it as unacceptable and likening it to a nation at war. He also alleged that the military is used as a tool to rig elections in favor of the highest bidder.

Additionally, Berefa condemned the disparity in compensation between elected political leaders and civil servants. He noted, “It is quite appalling that the annual take-home pay of elected political leaders in the National Assembly is equivalent to the 35-year salary of a civil servant. This is an aberration of our democracy. Politics seems more valuable than the men and women who risk their lives to protect and project the vibrant Nigerian state.”

Factional Crisis Rocks ADC In Akwa Ibom As Party Splits Deepen.

Barely a year after its inauguration in Akwa Ibom State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into a deep factional crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
