Oba Of Benin Disagrees With Edo Government’s Ban On OkaighelesBarely four days after the Edo State Government announced the banning of Okaigheles (youth leaders) in the Edo South senatorial district, the palace of the Oba of Benin has expressed disagreement with this decision.

According to DAILY POST, Governor Godwin Obaseki announced the ban on June 3, 2024, following a closed-door meeting with security chiefs in Edo State at the Government House in Benin City. The ban aims to address the surge in cultism, with Obaseki noting that over 150 individuals have died due to cult-related activities and homicides between January and May 2024.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Despite this, the Oba of Benin’s palace has stated that Okaigheles have not been banned in the Benin Kingdom. Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin, conveyed this message while addressing protesting Okaigheles who sought the palace’s intervention. Idah emphasized that Okaigheles are part of the traditional administrative structure of Benin, assisting village heads (Odionweres) in daily administration.

A statement from Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the Chief Press Secretary to the Oba of Benin, indicated that Idah, joined by Chief Oghafua Oyeoba and Chief Uyi Okungbowa, assured the palace’s commitment to peace and order. Idah stressed that while Okaigheles are integral to Benin’s heritage, the palace will not shield those involved in illegal activities and supports government action against wrongdoers.

“Okaighele is not a new concept in Benin. It has historical roots and cannot be banned by a simple decree. We will address this with the appropriate authorities. You have not been banned, but the palace will not condone violence or attacks on individuals or groups,” Idah stated.

Rowland Ogbomo, representing the aggrieved youths and village heads, highlighted that Okaigheles are essential for maintaining law and order according to Benin customs. He expressed surprise at the governor’s announcement and appealed to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, for intervention, clarifying that Okaigheles are not involved in cult activities.

“We are here regarding the recent ban on Okaigheles by the Governor and are appealing to our royal father to intervene. We are not cultists,” Ogbomo stated.

Denge Josef Onoh, the former Southeast spokesman for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to embrace statesmanship and prioritize reconciliation regarding the situation of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In an open letter dated September 24, 2026, and addressed to President Tinubu through Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Onoh emphasized that El-Rufai’s foundational contributions to the APC and the 2023 presidential campaign must not be forgotten. Highlighting El-Rufai’s instrumental role in securing Tinubu’s historic election victory, Onoh stated: “We cannot quickly erase from our memories the immense, foundational role Mallam El-Rufai played in ensuring the victory of the All Progressives Congress and your historic election in 2023.”

While describing El-Rufai as rigid, intensely opinionated, and notoriously difficult to work with, Onoh noted that these same traits reflected his deep loyalty once committed to a cause. He expressed concern that some of the former governor’s associates had distanced themselves due to political considerations, but stressed that he was unwilling to remain silent.

Drawing from history, Onoh urged Tinubu to follow examples of political reconciliation, such as Julius Caesar’s clemency and former President Shehu Shagari’s 1982 pardon of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, to demonstrate that mercy and unity can heal political divisions. He argued that presidential intervention would display profound political maturity rather than weakness, warning that leaving a key architect of the current democratic dispensation isolated risks deepening national fractures.

Concluding his appeal, Onoh urged the President to choose compassion over confinement and reconciliation over retribution, ensuring the situation fosters national healing instead of division. “Please, let us get value out of this. It matters,” he added.
