New Saliva Test For Early Prostate Cancer Detection

Study Overview
The study included over 6,142 men aged 55-69 and focused on developing a polygenic risk score based on genetic variations associated with prostate cancer. This approach allowed researchers to identify 588 individuals with the highest risk for further screening. The aim is to enable earlier detection in high-risk cases and reduce unnecessary anxiety and side effects for men at lower risk by avoiding unnecessary biopsies.
Advantages of the Saliva Test
The saliva test not only yields fewer false positives than the standard blood test but also appears more effective in detecting aggressive cancers. This significant finding was highlighted in research presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting.
The current blood test, which measures prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, often produces misleading results. Only 25 percent of men with high PSA levels actually have prostate cancer, and PSA tests can miss aggressive cancers while detecting slow-growing ones that may not require treatment.
Conversely, the saliva test demonstrated greater accuracy. In the study, 40 percent of men with high scores on the saliva test were diagnosed with prostate cancer following further investigation. This suggests the test is more effective at identifying men who truly need treatment, potentially leading to earlier intervention for aggressive cancers.
Expert Opinions
Professor Kristian Helin, chief executive of the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), emphasized the importance of early detection. “Cancers that are picked up early are much more likely to be curable, and with prostate cancer cases set to double by 2040, we must have a programme in place to diagnose the disease early,” he stated. Helin highlighted the shortcomings of the current PSA test, which can cause unnecessary treatments and miss cancer cases that require urgent attention. He stressed the urgent need for an improved screening test to address these issues effectively.
The new saliva test represents a promising advancement in the fight against prostate cancer, offering a more targeted and efficient screening method that could revolutionize early detection and treatment.

In an open letter dated September 24, 2026, and addressed to President Tinubu through Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Onoh emphasized that El-Rufai’s foundational contributions to the APC and the 2023 presidential campaign must not be forgotten. Highlighting El-Rufai’s instrumental role in securing Tinubu’s historic election victory, Onoh stated: “We cannot quickly erase from our memories the immense, foundational role Mallam El-Rufai played in ensuring the victory of the All Progressives Congress and your historic election in 2023.”
While describing El-Rufai as rigid, intensely opinionated, and notoriously difficult to work with, Onoh noted that these same traits reflected his deep loyalty once committed to a cause. He expressed concern that some of the former governor’s associates had distanced themselves due to political considerations, but stressed that he was unwilling to remain silent.
Drawing from history, Onoh urged Tinubu to follow examples of political reconciliation, such as Julius Caesar’s clemency and former President Shehu Shagari’s 1982 pardon of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, to demonstrate that mercy and unity can heal political divisions. He argued that presidential intervention would display profound political maturity rather than weakness, warning that leaving a key architect of the current democratic dispensation isolated risks deepening national fractures.
Concluding his appeal, Onoh urged the President to choose compassion over confinement and reconciliation over retribution, ensuring the situation fosters national healing instead of division. “Please, let us get value out of this. It matters,” he added.
