Shock, Disbelief As Benue IDPs Camp Records 200 Babies A Month

In Benue State, where over 1.5 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) seek refuge from repeated attacks by armed herdsmen, a startling trend has emerged—over 200 babies are born each month in one of the camps alone.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Dire Conditions

Despite the dire conditions in these camps—characterized by inadequate food and medical supplies, limited sleeping space, and other challenges—newborns continue to arrive in significant numbers.

Roots of the Issue

An investigation revealed that amidst their struggles, the IDPs find solace in familial bonds, often resulting in new pregnancies. While such occurrences might be celebrated under normal circumstances, in the context of an IDP camp, they present severe challenges.

Healthcare Strain

The influx of newborns strains already stretched healthcare services, leaving infants vulnerable to health risks due to the camp’s limited resources and access to proper care.

Resistance to Family Planning

Despite efforts to provide family planning resources, resistance, particularly among men, persists. Many husbands resist contraceptive methods, contributing to the high birth rate within the camps.

Call for Action

Authorities have acknowledged the issue’s gravity and called for urgent action. Efforts are underway to intensify advocacy and education, especially targeting men, to address the resistance to family planning methods.

Urgent Measures

The Benue State Primary Health Care Board, alongside other relevant agencies, is mobilizing resources to tackle this pressing issue. Advocacy campaigns and decision-making initiatives within the camps aim to address the root causes of the high birth rate and ensure the well-being of both mothers and infants.

As the plight of Benue’s IDPs continues to garner attention, swift action is essential to alleviate their suffering and safeguard the health and future of vulnerable populations within these camps.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
