Minimum Wage Negotiation: Labour Gets Restive As FG Plays Waiting Game

In a dramatic turn of events, the Federal Government’s negotiating team has again failed to present a new minimum wage proposal to the Technical Committee on the New National Minimum Wage (NNMW) for the second consecutive day. This delay has heightened tensions among labor unions as the five-day negotiation deadline looms large.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Strain on National Infrastructure

This development follows the temporary suspension of a nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC). The strike had previously brought significant parts of the national infrastructure to a standstill, including the national grid. In a bold statement yesterday, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, condemned the strike’s impact on the national grid as an act of “treason.”

Unmet Expectations

Despite high hopes for a revised wage offer, the government’s negotiating team, led by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, and the Minister of Budget, Atiku Bagudu, failed to present new figures. This failure comes even after the ministers had met with President Bola Tinubu, who directed them to formulate a sustainable wage proposal acceptable to all stakeholders.

The meeting concluded with assurances that “there is no cause for alarm,” yet no details were disclosed. The session, which reconvened around 5 pm yesterday, ended without a concrete proposal, leading to increased restiveness within the labor movement.

Inside Sources and Rising Tensions

A source close to the negotiations told Vanguard that the government team had raised issues requiring further discussion, prompting the formation of a technical committee. The source speculated, “The government team did not present any new offer. They requested that there were things to discuss and a technical committee was set up. I suspect that maybe the President is still going through the figures presented to him by the Minister of Finance. Maybe, the President may present his decision to the minister before our meeting tomorrow (today).”

A labor leader, expressing frustration over the government’s delay, stated, “We do not want to believe that the government is playing games with us. We all agreed with the government on Monday that they were going to make a new offer, and we have to round off this issue in five days starting from Tuesday. We have wasted two precious days without anything. I hope we will not go through the road we just passed through on Monday.”

Future Uncertain

As the deadline approaches, the labor unions remain on edge, waiting to see if the government will meet their demands or if the situation will escalate once more. The coming days will be crucial in determining the direction of the minimum wage negotiations and the broader implications for national stability.

Ambassadorial Nomination Under Fire: Frank Tie Tie Exposes ‘Mistake’ Regarding Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina!.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
