Ajayi Crowther University: Niger Delta Youth, NANS Demand Autopsy Report Of Deceased Student
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Niger Delta Youth Leaders Front are demanding an autopsy report on the deceased Mechanical Engineering student of Ajayi Crowther University, Jeffery Chamuke Akron. In a related development, 25 suspected students, aged 18-34, were brought before the Chief Magistrate Court in Oyo State on Wednesday and remanded in a custodial center until July 8 pending trial.
Akron, who resided in a hostel on the institution’s premises known as Shepherd Inn, reportedly endured torture inflicted by his fellow students from 6 pm on Friday until about 10 am on Saturday.
On Wednesday, the leadership of NANS staged a protest at the university to compel security authorities to conduct an autopsy on the deceased, an Itsekiri prince from Warri, Delta State, in a bid to uncover the true perpetrators of the murder.
Comrade Lucky Emonefe, NANS Universal President, and Honourable Chukwutem Nwogor, President of the Niger Delta Youth Leaders Front, voiced their demands during discussions with journalists, confirming their visit to the institution.
Expressing doubt about the identity of the 25 suspects arraigned in court, they accused certain security personnel and the school management of attempting to shield the actual perpetrators of the crime.
Honourable Chukwutem Nwogor also criticized the living conditions in the hostel where students are housed at Ajayi Crowther University, calling it uninhabitable. He further implicated the Minister of Education for purported indifference since the tragic incident occurred.
They urged the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, to demonstrate regulatory oversight over private and public universities and to intervene in the regrettable incident at the institution.
Nwogor remarked, “The killing of the innocent boy was barbaric. That hostel is uninhabitable.”
Additionally, Itsekiri elders, led by an uncle of the deceased, Prince Yemi Emiko, visited the institution last Wednesday. They inspected the hostel where the late prince was allegedly assaulted and held discussions with the school management. They also visited the morgue where Akron’s body was reportedly kept.

In a separate development, troops under Operation Hadin Kai arrested a 25-year-old man, Muhammad Mustapha, for allegedly spying on military movements and providing logistical support to Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters. The suspect, a native of Monguno Local Government Area, was detained on July 16 during a joint night patrol by the 403 Amphibious Brigade, the 130 Battalion (Motorised), the Nigerian Borderless Logistics Corps, and the Civilian Joint Task Force. As part of Operation Desert Sanity V, the operation successfully interrupted the suspect’s activities, which included monitoring military clearance operations along the Baga–Cross Kauwa Main Supply Route for insurgent groups.
