Naija News reported that Claudia Sheinbaum made history on Sunday by securing approximately 58-60 percent of the votes, becoming Mexico’s first female president.

In a statement from President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Sheinbaum’s election is highlighted as a significant milestone. It underscores the importance of elevating women’s voices in government, dismantling political barriers, and sending a powerful global message about the critical role of women in decision-making processes.

President Tinubu, representing the government and people of Nigeria, extended warm congratulations to the people of Mexico and emphasized the need to strengthen bilateral ties between both nations in areas of mutual interest.

The statement read, “President Bola Tinubu extends his congratulations to Her Excellency, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as the first female President of the United Mexican States (Mexico).

“Ms. Sheinbaum won the Mexican presidential election by a landslide, becoming the first female President in the country since its independence in 1821.

“President Tinubu states that the election of President-elect Sheinbaum accents the voices of women in government, shatters the political glass ceiling, and sends a reverberating message across the world that women must not only be participants but principal architects in shaping and implementing decisions affecting the lives of many.

“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, the President congratulates the people of Mexico and calls for the strengthening of bilateral ties between both nations across areas of mutual interest.”

Sheinbaum’s resounding victory in the Mexican presidential election signifies a historic moment for both the nation and the global community.

  • A family source corroborated that relatives were later informed of the incident, claiming that Bolarinwa reported being severely beaten and subjected to physical abuse during a search for a mobile phone.

Background on Conviction

Bolarinwa has been serving a prison sentence following his initial remand in April 2022 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

  • He was arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja on a 13-count charge encompassing forgery, possession of false documents, and obtaining money by false pretences amounting to ₦266.5 million.

  • The EFCC stated that Bolarinwa deceived Kodef Clearing Resources Limited by posing as a military general and claiming that former President Muhammadu Buhari had shortlisted him for appointment as Chief of Army Staff, extracting large sums to “facilitate” the role.

  • Investigators also recovered forged appointment letters, military identification cards, recommendations bearing former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s name, and several firearms from his Alagbado residence.

  • Although he initially pleaded not guilty, Bolarinwa changed his plea to “guilty” during court proceedings on July 7, 2022.

  • Justice Taiwo convicted him on all 13 counts, sentencing him to seven years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine, ordering asset forfeitures, and directing him to pay ₦20 million in restitution.
