Detectives are scrutinizing the role of a third-generation bank (name withheld) in facilitating the illegal transfer. The suspects had provided account details of four banks where the complainant deposited the money, only to later discover that the suspects had conspired to defraud him.

In a petition filed by Anthony Odule on behalf of the complainant and addressed to the Inspector General of Police, it was alleged that on December 8, 2023, the suspects—Gambo Dahiru, Ibrahim Mohammed, Shaibu Mohammed, and Francis Azubuike aka Frank—had deceived Ahmed into believing there was a genuine $1 million for sale from Dubai, which he agreed to purchase.

The petition stated: “Our client reported that the suspects provided the following account details: Account Name: Usman Global Investment Limited; Account Number: 5400393231, domiciled in (a new generation bank), Account Name: Yadiz Oil and Gas Plc Nigeria Limited; Account Number: 1014396770, domiciled in (another new generation bank), and Account Name: M. Technology Red Set; Account Number: 5404168804. The complainant deposited N830 million, N330 million, and N10 million, respectively, into these accounts.”

The petition continued, “Upon preliminary investigation, it was found that the suspects conspired to defraud our client, as they did not have any dollars to sell but instead shared the money among themselves. Our client is particularly distressed as he borrowed part of the funds he sent to the suspects, and non-repayment will severely damage his reputation.”

Upon realizing the scam, the complainant immediately alerted the banks involved, requesting them to halt the payments and refund his money. One bank promptly refunded part of the money, but the third-generation bank refused to return the funds, claiming the account holders had provided value for the money, a claim the complainant denies.

“If their claim were true, why didn’t the bank ask for evidence?” the complainant questioned. “I asked the bank to return my money or freeze the account, but they have done nothing. They have the power to stop this fraud but have failed to act.”

Police sources indicated that detectives would soon summon some bank officials for questioning. Six suspected fraudsters have already been arrested and have refunded some of the money. However, the funds transferred through the third-generation bank have yet to be recovered.
