PASAN, which is affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), temporarily suspended electricity and water supply to the structures housing the Senate and the House of Representatives, along with other amenities within the National Assembly compound.
The strike action follows the ultimatum given by the NLC and TUC regarding the new minimum wage, which expired on May 31, 2024.
Attempts to resolve the impasse between the Federal Government and organised labour during a meeting held on Tuesday proved unsuccessful. Despite the government raising its offer to N60,000, labour rejected the proposal, maintaining its demand for N494,000.
Subsequent negotiations on Friday also failed to yield a consensus, with the government refusing to budge from its proposed N60,000 minimum wage.
Consequently, the NLC declared a nationwide indefinite strike, citing the government’s perceived lack of seriousness and contempt towards the demands of Nigerian workers.
Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, criticized the government’s approach during the negotiations, highlighting the absence of governors and key ministers, which he deemed as indicative of a lack of commitment to resolving the National Minimum Wage issue.
As the strike commenced on Monday, the suspension of water supply to the National Assembly compound represents another facet of the nationwide industrial action initiated by the organised labour.
