In a heartwarming display of humility and connection, Labour Party gubernatorial candidate Olumide Akpata took a break from his hectic campaign schedule this weekend. He ventured to the Ekosodin axis of Ugbowo to join a massive crowd of University of Benin students in watching the UEFA Champions League Final between Dortmund and Real Madrid.

The viral video captures Akpata seated among a throng of enthusiastic students, all united in their love for football. As Real Madrid clinched victory, the air buzzed with excitement and celebration, transcending club loyalties.

The energy reached a fever pitch when the Labour Party gubernatorial candidate’s campaign anthem echoed through the crowd, amplifying the jubilation. The students’ joy was palpable, their cheers a testament to Akpata’s relatability and the infectious spirit of the event.

“Visiting my old stomping grounds at Ekosodin brought back memories and reinforced the unifying power of sports. As we cheered with students during the UEFA Champions League Final, I witnessed firsthand the infectious passion and energy of our youth. This experience reminded me why we must create avenues to positively channel their enthusiasm into nation-building. By harnessing their vigour and providing platforms for constructive engagement, we can unleash their immense potential for the greater good of Edo State and beyond. Youthful energy is our greatest asset, and it’s up to us to provide the right outlets for it to thrive,” Akpata captioned the trending video of the engagement on his official social media handles.

Indeed, the sight of Akpata mingling with the students, celebrating in unison, and reminiscing about his own days at UNIBEN, has struck a chord with many Edolites. It showcased a leader who is not only focused on policy and progress but also deeply connected to the people and their everyday joys. The resounding sentiment: “Olumide Akpata na our guy.”

This spontaneous and genuine interaction has only heightened the anticipation for the upcoming Edo election, with many seeing Akpata as a beacon of hope and a leader who truly understands and values his constituents.
