On Monday, members of the labour union took action by shutting down the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office in Lagos, as part of the nationwide strike organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to protest the proposed minimum wage. In a related development, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has halted port operations nationwide in compliance with the strike directive from the NLC and TUC. An MWUN official confirmed the closure of ports in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri, Onne, Calabar, and other locations, stating that operations would remain suspended until further instructions from the national labour leadership.
Similarly, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that its workers intentionally shut down the country’s power grid as part of the strike. According to TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, transmission substations were deliberately closed by labour unions, resulting in the grid shutdown.
