Amid the ongoing national strike declared by the NLC and Trade Union Congress, Bamgbose Betty, former Treasurer of the National Labour Congress and current Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, has urged the Senate to empathize with the plight of labor unions by aligning their salaries with the minimum wage…..CONTINUE READING
Speaking during an interview on Monday, Betty expressed discontent with the government’s handling of minimum wage negotiations, emphasizing the prolonged discussions without tangible outcomes.
She advocated for high-ranking officials, including senators, to have their salaries tied to the proposed minimum wage to gain firsthand experience of the challenges faced by workers. Betty asserted, “For them to truly understand our struggles, let the Senate and others adopt the minimum wage as their salary benchmark. It’s time for them to walk in our shoes.”
Betty highlighted the severe economic challenges confronting workers, lamenting delayed payments and financial hardships. Despite the strike, she noted that essential medical services were being maintained.
Meanwhile, organized labor commenced a nationwide indefinite strike following the Federal Government’s reluctance to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000. President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, announced the strike, citing the government’s failure to pass a new National Minimum Wage Act into law.
In a joint statement with Trade Union Congress counterpart Festus Osifo, Ajaero expressed disappointment over the breakdown of negotiations and demanded a reversal of the electricity tariff increase to N65/kWh.
Negotiations between organized labor and the Federal Government collapsed after both parties failed to reach a consensus, leading to the commencement of the strike on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
