Former APGA Chairman Calls For INEC Chairman’s Resignation Over Court Contempt
Chekwas Okorie, the former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has demanded the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu. Okorie’s call for resignation is based on Yakubu’s alleged contempt of court for failing to recognize Edozie Njoku as the authentic National Chairman of APGA, despite a Supreme Court ruling……CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During an interaction with reporters at the Court of Appeal premises, where Okorie and other APGA members submitted a petition, he expressed his dismay over Yakubu’s continued tenure. According to Okorie, the INEC chairman’s refusal to comply with the court order has made him unfit to hold office.
“Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in a sane country, will not be the presiding officer of the highest democratic institution in the land, having been found guilty of contempt of court from November last year,” Okorie stated.
He criticized the decision of the Court of Appeal to arrest the sentencing of Yakubu, arguing that it undermines the judicial process. “That the Court of Appeal arrested the sentencing does not remove the fact that he was already found guilty. And I want to say that arresting sentencing is another shocker because if a judgment has been given and awaiting sentencing, the upper court is supposed to allow the lower court to fulfill its job.”
Okorie asserted that Yakubu’s position as INEC chairman is untenable given his status as a contemnor. “The constitution is clear on that. I’m calling out to Mahmood to leave that office. He is an embarrassment to this country. It is scandalizing for a contemnor to remain as the Chairman of the highest democratic institution in Nigeria.”
This controversy stems from a Supreme Court decision that declared Edozie Njoku as the legitimate National Chairman of APGA, a ruling which INEC has reportedly ignored. Okorie and other APGA leaders are pressing for compliance with the court’s decision, insisting that Yakubu’s failure to adhere to the ruling is damaging the credibility of the electoral commission.

-
Credit for First Term: Crediting President Tinubu’s 2023 victory to a “collabo” (collaboration) strategy, Chiefpriest expressed hope that the President would be able to resolve the current political dispute between the Governors’ Forum and Minister Wike to replicate that success.
