Call For INEC Chairman’s Resignation

Chief Chekwas Okorie, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has called for the resignation of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Okorie’s demand is based on allegations of contempt of court related to the APGA leadership dispute……CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Allegations and Court Rulings

Okorie alleges that Yakubu has been found guilty of contempt for failing to recognize Chief Edozie Njoku as the current National Chairman of APGA, despite a Supreme Court ruling confirming Njoku’s position. This failure to comply with the court order has prompted significant criticism.

“Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in a sane country, will not be the presiding officer of the highest democratic institution in the land, having been found guilty of contempt of court from November last year,” Okorie stated.

Court of Appeal’s Role

Okorie also criticized the Court of Appeal for arresting the sentencing of Yakubu, arguing that this action does not negate the guilt established by the lower court. He believes that the appellate court should have allowed the lower court to complete its process, including sentencing.

“That the Court of Appeal arrested the sentencing does not remove the fact that he was already found guilty. And I want to say that arresting sentencing is another shocker because if a judgment has been given and awaiting sentencing the upper court is supposed to allow the lower court to fulfil its job.”

Call for Resignation

Okorie labeled Yakubu’s continued tenure as an embarrassment and scandalous, urging him to resign immediately. He emphasized that it is inappropriate for someone found guilty of contempt to remain in charge of Nigeria’s highest democratic institution.

“I’m calling out to Mahmood to leave that office. He is an embarrassment to this country. It is scandalising for a contemnor to remain as the Chairman of the highest democratic institution in Nigeria,” he added.

Conclusion

The call for Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s resignation by Chief Chekwas Okorie underscores the tension and controversy surrounding the leadership of APGA and the actions of INEC. The situation highlights ongoing concerns about compliance with judicial rulings and the integrity of democratic institutions in Nigeria.
