The violence erupted when gunmen attacked a military checkpoint at Obikabia junction, Ogbor Hill, claiming the lives of five soldiers and destroying military vehicles. The incident occurred during the enforcement of a sit-at-home order by IPOB to commemorate Biafra Heroes Day.
In response to the attack, the Defence Headquarters vowed to retaliate, accusing IPOB and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), of carrying out the heinous act. This declaration of intent has intensified fear and apprehension among residents, leading to the closure of schools and markets.
The military presence in Aba has escalated, with reports of military helicopters hovering over the area, heightening anxiety among residents. Some markets, including Ngwa Road Market, Alaoji Market, Cemetery Market, and Enyimba Market, have been closed down, further exacerbating economic disruptions in the region.
While the military intensifies efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, the Abia State government has offered a N25 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of the killers. President Bola Tinubu also pledged decisive action against the assailants, emphasizing the government’s resolve to uphold law and order.
Amidst the escalating tensions, residents grapple with uncertainty and fear for their safety. The plea for cooperation between the community and security forces underscores the gravity of the situation and the imperative of collective action in restoring peace and stability to the region.
