The gathering, organized by the Lagos State Safety Commission in collaboration with Global Sports Exclusive Promotions, brought together administrators from various beach houses and swimming pool facilities, alongside representatives from organizations such as the Private Swimming Coaches Association Lagos (PSCAL), Ocean 28 Swimming Academy, Dolphin Swimming School, Titan Seal Community, Lagos State Waterways Authority, and other concerned parties.
Mr. Lanre Mojola, Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, emphasized the shared responsibility for water safety and urged swimming facility operators to ensure the presence of certified lifeguards to prevent drowning. He pledged ongoing advocacy efforts by the commission and committed to organizing additional safety programs for schools while fostering continuous collaboration with water safety stakeholders.
Hon. Olarenwaju M. Saidi, initiator of the initiative and Governing Board Member at the Lagos State Sports Commission, highlighted the need to address drowning incidents by engaging stakeholders in the aquatic industry. He stressed the necessity of certified lifeguards in communities with operational jetties across Lagos State and announced plans for practical lifeguard training next month in alignment with World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25th, as designated by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Mr. Ibrahim, representing the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), emphasized the Authority’s commitment to water safety and urged stakeholders to prioritize people’s well-being on water. He called for collective efforts among beach houses and swimming pool management to enhance water safety measures.
During discussions, concerns were raised about the shortage of certified lifeguards and the lack of data on jetty operators, contributing to drowning incidents. Suggestions included increased monitoring with lifeguard-equipped boats and ongoing training and recruitment of professional swimmers as lifeguards. Additionally, participants emphasized the importance of raising awareness about drowning beyond beaches and pools, highlighting the need for broader sensitization efforts.
