The fire erupted at around 12:30 p.m. in the market situated along Tejuosho Canal, which comprises shops and residential buildings. Traders recounted that the blaze originated from a room where a member of the community had inadvertently left food unattended on a gas cooker.
Swiftly spreading to neighboring wooden structures along the canal, the flames threw the entire area into chaos as residents scrambled to escape.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and Lagos Neighbourhood Security Watch, swiftly mobilized to combat the inferno and provide assistance.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, and Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, assured that the situation was under control, with ongoing rescue efforts.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that several wooden shanties along Tejuosho canal were gutted by fire. Fire combat is ongoing to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings like NTA, Oba Tejuosho House and other residential estates in the environ. Rescue operation ongoing.”
