On Wednesday, officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, led by Ifeanyi Onyiche, visited the site and enforced a “Stop work order” after receiving a petition alleging that the gas plant posed a danger to the community.

HRH Eze George Agim, the traditional ruler of Umuriem, confirmed the petition. He explained, “About two weeks ago, I received a petition from my people regarding the construction of the gas plant. They expressed concerns that the plant would endanger their lives, citing a similar incident in Umuoma, Nekede, three years ago, which resulted in six deaths. I support the community’s stance.”

Marjorie Ezeihe, convener of the human rights organization Onurubee, said, “We received reports that the gas plant construction endangered lives. A preliminary field study showed the plant was only 20 meters from buildings. We sought intervention from the state Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), and the Department of Upstream Sector.”

However, Reverend Ekema Njoku, the landowner, stated that the Umuriem community had unanimously agreed to and approved the construction of the gas plant. “Umuriem Welfare Association granted consent for the gas plant,” he asserted.

Pastor Nwaneri Charles Eberechukwu, a community leader, added, “We requested the construction halt due to fears of a repeat of the fatal gas explosion in Umuoma three years ago. To avoid taking the law into our hands, we sought external assistance.”

The situation reflects ongoing community concerns about safety and environmental impact, prompting government intervention to address these issues comprehensively.

The club’s revenue saw a 1.7 percent boost, largely propelled by a nearly 20 percent increase in broadcasting income following a third-place finish in the Premier League during the 2025/26 season. However, both commercial and matchday revenues dropped by nearly 5 percent due to playing without European football.

Key highlights from the financial report include:

  • Stadium Expansion & Cost-Cutting: The club invested £63.5 million on land adjacent to Old Trafford as part of ambitions to build a new 100,000-capacity stadium, while co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has continued implementing strict cost-cutting initiatives and job reductions.

  • Future Outlook: Chief Executive Omar Berrada expressed confidence in the club’s trajectory and financial discipline, with the club projecting revenues between £740 million and £760 million for the current financial year.

Despite the positive financial outlook and a return to Champions League football under manager Michael Carrick, the team has faced a rocky start to the new Premier League campaign, picking up five points from their first five matches and exiting the English League Cup.
