In a statement released on Tuesday, Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS National Public Relations Officer, addressed the incident captured in a viral video. The video shows Customs officers and VIO operatives engaged in a brawl at the AYA roundabout less than a week ago.
Maiwada confirmed that the incident occurred on Friday, May 24, 2024, near the VIO office at AYA Roundabout in Abuja. He stated that the officers involved were from the Customs Mechanical Unit based in Karu Barracks, Abuja.
“The service expresses deep concern and empathy for those affected by this regrettable incident. We unequivocally dissociate ourselves from the actions of these officers, which appear to be self-motivated. A thorough investigation is underway, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken to prevent future occurrences,” Maiwada said.
He emphasized that such behavior contradicts the values and operational standards of the NCS. It undermines one of the key policies of the Comptroller-General of Customs, which is to foster collaboration with sister security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and their properties.
The NCS, under the leadership of CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and his Management Team, strongly condemns such conduct and maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards actions that jeopardize professionalism and inter-agency cooperation. The Service remains committed to generating revenue, facilitating trade, and combating smuggling to support a more robust and secure economy for all Nigerians.
