Okuama-Ewu: Displaced Residents Finally Report To IDPs Camp....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
UGHELLI—Residents of Okuama-Ewu community in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, who initially resisted relocation to the state government’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp at Ewu, finally arrived at the camp yesterday. This development follows a truce brokered between the community leaders and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori…..CONTINUE REDAING
Buses provided by the state government transported the residents to the camp from an agreed location. This came after a meeting last Friday at Government House, Asaba, where the community leaders and the governor reached an understanding.
The residents had previously returned to Okuama-Ewu on May 8, shortly after Nigerian Army troops, who had been stationed there following the killing of 17 military personnel on March 14, left the community. Despite the state government’s initial efforts, the residents refused to move to the Ewu camp, fearing that their rival Okoloba community, involved in a land dispute with them, would take over their land in their absence.
Governor Oborevwori assured the community leaders of his commitment to their welfare, promising to start rebuilding the local health center and a six-classroom block soon. This assurance convinced the community to agree to the relocation.
By 10:30 a.m. yesterday, men, women, and children began arriving at the camp by bus, responding to the governor’s plea for registration.
Community and Government Reactions
Pastor Edewor Ogedegbe, Secretary of the Ewu-Ughelli South Development Forum, expressed optimism after meeting the governor. He recounted the governor’s concern for the displaced residents and his commitment to addressing the underlying issues systematically and gradually. Ogedegbe said the community decided to trust the governor, especially after his commitment to rebuild essential infrastructure like the health center and primary school.
Ogedegbe noted the challenge of accommodating all displaced persons, stating, “The earlier they make room for extension, the better,” as many residents remain scattered across various communities.
Camp Management’s Response
Abraham Ogbodo, Chairman of the Management Committee of the Okuama-Ewu IDPs Camp, expressed excitement about the residents’ arrival. He acknowledged the camp’s current capacity issues but assured that they would increase the camp’s capacity immediately to accommodate the influx. Ogbodo emphasized that the camp would operate as a community, with residents taking responsibility for cooking, marketing, and sanitation.
Austin Ohwofaria, the camp commandant, confirmed that the leaders had fulfilled their promise to the governor by ensuring the residents came to the camp. He assured that the camp could accommodate more than the planned 200 residents and had room for expansion.
Conclusion
As Vanguard observed, the influx of residents overwhelmed the camp leadership, with numbers exceeding the initial capacity. Except for key figures like the chairman, commandant, and his assistant, other members of the management committee were absent, highlighting the need for swift capacity and resource adjustments to accommodate the growing population.
