Army’s Role and Actions:
- Clarification of Role: Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu emphasized that the Army’s primary concern is maintaining law and order. He denied allegations by the Kano State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) that troops were involved in the emirate dispute.
- Preventive Measures: The Army’s actions are focused on preventing any potential breakdown of security. According to Nwachukwu, the Army is taking “proactive steps to checkmate any possible breakdown or breach of the security” in response to the emirate tussle.
- Monitoring Situation: The Army is currently monitoring the situation and is prepared to intervene only if the security situation escalates beyond the capacity of the police to handle.
Background of the Tussle:
The dispute erupted following the dethronement of Aminu Ado-Bayero by Governor Abba Yusuf on Thursday, and the subsequent reappointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano on Friday. The Kano State House of Assembly passed the Emirate Councils Amendment Bill, which the governor signed into law, leading to the dissolution of four additional emirate councils created by the previous governor, Abdullahi Ganduje. These actions resulted in the dethronement of the monarchs of the abolished emirates.
Current Developments:
- Ado-Bayero’s Status: Since his dethronement, Ado-Bayero’s whereabouts had been unknown. However, reports indicate he returned to Kano on Saturday, a development that has heightened tensions in the state.
- NBA’s Stance: The Kano branch of the NBA condemned the involvement of the Nigerian Army in enforcing court orders related to the emirate dispute. The association criticized the use of military personnel in what it views as a civil matter.

Army’s Commitment:
Brigadier General Nwachukwu reiterated the Army’s commitment to ensuring peace and security in Kano and the region. He assured the public that the military’s involvement would remain limited to monitoring and preventing violence unless the situation deteriorates significantly.
The Army’s statement aims to clarify its position amid accusations and ensure the public that their actions are solely aimed at maintaining peace and preventing violence in the state.
