The Israeli military confirmed the attack, stating that its air force struck a Hamas compound in Rafah using “precise ammunition and on the basis of precise intelligence.” The military claimed that the strike eliminated Hamas’ chief of staff for the West Bank and another senior official responsible for deadly attacks on Israelis.

“The IDF is aware of reports indicating that as a result of the strike and fire that was ignited several civilians in the area were harmed. The incident is under review,” the military said.

Ashraf Al-Qidra, the spokesman for the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, reported that among the 35 fatalities, most were women and children, and dozens more were wounded.

The airstrike occurred in the Tel Al-Sultan neighborhood in western Rafah, where thousands had sought shelter after fleeing the eastern parts of the city, where Israeli forces launched a ground offensive over two weeks ago.

The International Committee of the Red Cross indicated that its field hospital in Rafah was overwhelmed with casualties, with other hospitals also receiving a large number of patients.
