As Nigeria marks the 2024 International Children’s Day, the Idimuwem Peace and Governance Initiative (IPGI) has called on Nigerians to foster a culture of peace and effective conflict management in children. Akpabio highlighted that children aged 8-10 are capable of understanding and addressing issues related to peace and conflict. She argued that instilling these values early is crucial for the long-term stability and peace of the nation. Given Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, Akpabio noted that it is vital to start peace education with the youngest members of society.
“We realise the importance of starting early to build capacity among our citizens for peace, effective conflict management, and good governance. There is a lot of stabilization work going on in places that had violent conflicts to stabilize the country, but we realise that an important element in the long term, to build capacity for peace and effective conflict management is to start early and to start with children and young people,” Akpabio stated.
She added that the IPGI’s Peace Art Competition is aimed at children aged 8-10, using art as a medium to engage them in the concepts of peace and conflict. IPGI has developed books that can be integrated into a peace education curriculum for children, reinforcing the message through creative and enjoyable activities. This year, the competition focuses on the theme of unity in diversity.
Precious Essien, Programmes Officer at the Youth Alive Foundation, emphasized that learning conflict resolution from a young age helps children develop personal and social harmony. Essien noted that these skills are essential for building healthier relationships and navigating disagreements, aligning with the foundation’s objectives.
In her remarks, a representative from the Embassy of Belgium in Nigeria, Chilotam Chibundu, stressed that the goal of peace is shared universally by artists and diplomats alike. Chibundu, the Political and Economic Officer at the embassy, highlighted the significance of art in depicting peace, stating that “a picture says more than a thousand words.”
She encouraged the children participating in the Peace Art Competition to use their creativity to express the concept of peace. “Building peace, both within the United Nations and in our daily lives, is always a work in progress. It will be your job now to depict it in your own language of lines and colours. Good luck with that! The Embassy of Belgium is eagerly awaiting to contemplate your works of art,” Chibundu concluded.
The celebration of Children’s Day serves as a reminder of the vital role children play in shaping the future and underscores the importance of equipping them with the skills and values necessary for peace and conflict resolution.

Authorities have reassured residents of Tsohon Gari and neighboring communities that the training is strictly supervised and will take place in a secure, controlled environment. However, the public has been advised to steer clear of the immediate vicinity of the range to maintain safety and allow the exercise to proceed smoothly.
