According to Daily Trust, young protesters were seen marching on the streets around 4 p.m. on Sunday, demanding the reinstatement of the dethroned Emir Bayero. The protest followed a special prayer session, after which participants lit bonfires on major roads and chanted anti-government slogans. They held placards with messages such as “Abba Kabir Yusuf, Obey Court Order,” “Court Brought You,” “You Must Obey The Court,” “Aminu Is Still Our Emir,” and “We Are Against Injustice.”
Policemen were present at the protest scene but did not intervene to disperse the demonstrators.
Earlier on Sunday morning, similar protests occurred in Gaya, one of the five emirates affected by the annulment of the Kano Emirates Council Law. Protesters in Gaya also carried placards and sang anti-government songs, condemning the dissolution of the emirates as unjust and politically motivated.
The protests come after the Kano State Assembly passed the ‘Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024,’ which dissolved the establishment of additional emirates. The demonstrators allege that this move was driven by political motives and seek to uphold what they perceive as justice for Emir Bayero.
