As President Bola Tinubu approaches his first anniversary in office, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on him to publish his assets to demonstrate his commitment to transparency and accountability. In an open letter dated May 25, 2024, and signed by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization urged Tinubu to use this milestone as an opportunity to showcase his dedication to democratic governance and openness…..CONTINUE READING
SERAP’s Recommendations:
- Publish Assets: SERAP encouraged Tinubu to publish his own asset declaration forms and to persuade Vice-President Kashim Shettima, ministers, and state governors to do the same.
- Constitutional Amendment: The organization proposed that Tinubu should advocate for a constitutional amendment that would mandate the creation of asset declaration databases, ensuring that officials’ assets are disclosed before, during, and after their public service.
- Public Trust and Accountability: SERAP emphasized that publishing asset declaration forms would serve the public interest, foster public trust, and establish a system of transparency and accountability.
Statements from SERAP:
- Legitimate Public Interest: “Widely publishing your asset declaration form and encouraging your Vice-President, ministers, and state governors to also widely publish their assets would serve legitimate public interests.”
- Strengthening Democracy: “Openness and transparency in the details of asset declaration forms of high-level public officials would strengthen the country’s democracy and promote accountability at all levels of government.”
- Reaffirming Commitment: “We urge you to use your first anniversary in office as an important opportunity to underscore and reaffirm your oft-repeated commitment to democratic governance, openness and public accountability by immediately taking concrete steps to implement the proposed recommendations.”
Tinubu’s Inaugural Promise: SERAP reminded Tinubu of his promise during his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, where he committed to taking proactive steps to discourage corruption and to ensure Nigeria is governed impartially according to the constitution and the rule of law.
By publishing his assets and encouraging his administration to do the same, President Tinubu would not only be adhering to his initial promises but also setting a precedent for future administrations, thereby promoting a culture of accountability and transparency in Nigeria’s governance.
