Current Power Generation

Nigeria’s power generation currently fluctuates between 4,000 and 4,500MW, serving a population of over 200 million people. However, Adelabu noted a significant milestone: on May 3, 2024, the country’s power generation reached 5,000MW for the first time in three years.

Future Goals and Improvements

Adelabu expressed confidence that power generation would hit 6,000MW before the end of this year, citing improvements in the sector over the past year. He highlighted the presidential metering initiative, which aims to provide two million meters annually for the next five years, to improve the sector’s liquidity and reduce estimated billing.

Minister’s Statement

“On generation capacity, let me say that 5,000MW of power was achieved in May 2024 for the first time in three years. Precisely on May 3, 2024, we generated, transmitted, and distributed 5,003.45MW of power,” Adelabu said. “We all know where we were before now. But we rose to the occasion and changed the situation for the better, and our target is to achieve 6,000MW before the end of this year, which will be the first time in the history of Nigeria, and it will happen.”

Infrastructural Upgrades

Adelabu also mentioned a series of infrastructural upgrades over the past year, with the ongoing Presidential Power Initiative playing a crucial role in improving Nigeria’s power assets. The government is in the process of finalizing contracts for Phase 1 of this initiative.

International Collaboration

In November 2023, President Tinubu and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz signed an accelerated performance agreement to expedite the implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative, aimed at enhancing electricity supply in Nigeria.

Upcoming Projects

  • Grid Evacuation Capacity: An additional 2,230MW, with 183MW to be commissioned by the end of June 2024.
  • Rehabilitation of Substations: 15 brownfield substations with expected contract dates in August 2024.
  • Construction of Substations: 22 greenfield substations with expected contract dates in October 2024.

The minister concluded by emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s power infrastructure and achieving the ambitious target of 6,000MW by December 2024.

Ambassadorial Nomination Under Fire: Frank Tie Tie Exposes ‘Mistake’ Regarding Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina!.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
