Dr. Shaibu Husseini, the Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has addressed misconceptions regarding recent reports suggesting a ban on money rituals and smoking scenes in Nigerian films……..CONTINUE READING

Husseini clarified that during a national stakeholders engagement on smoke-free Nollywood in Enugu, he did not announce a ban on smoking or ritual scenes in movies. Instead, he highlighted the existence of NFVCB Regulations 2024, which prohibits the promotion and glamorization of money rituals, ritual killing, tobacco, and nicotine products in movies, musical videos, and skits.

The regulation aims to discourage unnecessary depiction, promotion, or glamorization of tobacco or nicotine products, while also requiring health warnings for smoking scenes necessary for historical accuracy or educational purposes. Husseini emphasized that the NFVCB will not stifle creativity but will enforce regulations to promote responsible content.

Former President of the Association of Nollywood Core Producers (ANCOP), Comrade Alex Eyengho, corroborated Husseini’s clarification, confirming that the conversation at the stakeholders’ engagement revolved around enforcing existing laws governing smoking and ritual themes in Nollywood productions.

Eyengho stressed that Husseini did not announce an outright ban on tobacco smoking or money ritual themes in Nollywood. Instead, he emphasized ongoing stakeholder engagement and classification of films, prioritizing responsible content creation.

Both Husseini and Eyengho expressed opposition to the glamorization of tobacco smoking, money rituals, and other forms of rituals in Nigerian films, emphasizing the importance of reflecting societal norms responsibly in cinematic productions.
