This development comes in the wake of the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II on Thursday, May 23.

According to a report by Daily Nigerian, Bayero visited Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to seek the intervention of the Awujale of the Ijebu Kingdom, Oba Sikiru Adetona, in persuading President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene on his behalf.

Sources close to the matter revealed that the dethroned monarch intended to return to the palace to collect his belongings, taking advantage of Governor Yusuf’s 48-hour deadline.

However, the state government reportedly intervened to halt Bayero’s move and instructed security operatives to prevent him from boarding a flight to Kano.

A source within the state government explained that this action was taken to prevent potential unrest in the state.

“When we learned of his plan to return to the palace, we ordered all the vehicles in the convoy to return. The vehicles were already at Kano airport awaiting his return. We also alerted security agents to thwart his plans of flying back to Kano at the moment,” said the source.

  • According to an insider source, prison warders entered Bolarinwa’s cell while he was asleep, woke him up suddenly, and pushed him to the ground, causing him to fall.

  • Following the alleged altercation, he was rushed to the Military Hospital on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, for medical attention and theatre evaluation.

  • A family source corroborated that relatives were later informed of the incident, claiming that Bolarinwa reported being severely beaten and subjected to physical abuse during a search for a mobile phone.

  • The family source also expressed deep safety concerns, alleging that this incident follows several previous attempts on his life.

Background on Conviction

Bolarinwa has been serving a prison sentence following his initial remand in April 2022 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

  • He was arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja on a 13-count charge encompassing forgery, possession of false documents, and obtaining money by false pretences amounting to ₦266.5 million.
