According to a statement from the management of Globalupfront Newspapers, Onuorah was released late Thursday night by the Enugu State Police Command. The arrest had been initiated by the Ebonyi Police Command, which requested his detention.
“We have confirmed the release (on bail) of our Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Madu Onuorah, who was abducted by men of the Ebonyi Police Command on Wednesday evening from his residence in Lugbe, Abuja. He was released late Thursday night by the Enugu State Police Command who requested the Ebonyi Police to abduct him for them,” the statement read.
The management of Globalupfront Newspapers expressed its support for Onuorah and the publication that led to his arrest, emphasizing the importance of free speech and due process. “We solidly stand by our Editor-in-Chief and the harmless story we published. We insist the police station is not a court of law where alleged defamation cases are tried,” the statement added.
Onuorah was taken from his home at around 6 p.m. in the presence of his family by about 10 fully-armed policemen. They arrived in two Sienna buses and did not present a warrant of arrest, causing distress to his wife and children.
The management also thanked the journalism community, friends, well-wishers, and defenders of free expression who supported them during this challenging period. They are awaiting a full briefing from Onuorah and their lawyers before deciding on their next course of action.
This incident has sparked discussions about press freedom and the proper procedures for addressing allegations of defamation. The journalism community and advocates for free speech are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that such occurrences are addressed appropriately and that the rights of journalists are protected.
