George made these remarks while addressing the nation in an event titled “My Thoughts on The State of Our Country in the Last 25 Years: A Time to Chart A New Direction.” He responded to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent statement, indicating his willingness to step down in 2027 if the PDP selects the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in 2023.

Asserting the importance of adhering to the party’s constitution, George underscored the significance of power rotation, noting the detrimental effects of deviating from this principle. He referenced Section 7 subsection 3C of the party’s constitution, which mandates adherence to zoning and rotation procedures for party and elective positions.

George reiterated that the principle of power rotation was instituted to prevent any circumstances that might lead to military intervention. He explained that the division of the country into six geopolitical zones by the party’s founding fathers aimed to ensure representation for all tribes and prevent domination by majority tribes.

Moreover, George outlined the top six positions in the country designated for rotation among the six geopolitical zones, including the Presidency, Vice Presidency, Senate Presidency, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Chairman of the party.

He emphasized that adherence to this zoning principle was crucial for equity and justice and highlighted the adverse effects of deviating from it, which contributed to division within the PDP.

In essence, George’s remarks underscore the importance of honoring the party’s zoning principle as a fundamental aspect of ensuring fairness, inclusivity, and ultimately, success for the PDP in the upcoming 2027 elections.

“South Has Had More Time In Power” — Atiku Speaks On Zoning Debate

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has argued that the North is not disadvantaged in Nigeria’s power-sharing arrangement under democratic rule.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Atiku made the statement during an interview on Arise Television, where he spoke on zoning, fairness, and political balance in the country.

He noted that since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999, the South has held the presidency for about 18 years, while the North has governed for roughly 10 years.

According to him, this should be taken into account when discussing which region has benefited more from the country’s power rotation system. He also maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains the only major political party with zoning clearly embedded in its constitution.

“The South has governed for 18 years and the North for 10. So who is really in deficit if we are being fair? Even more broadly, the only party with zoning formally entrenched is the PDP,” he said.

Atiku also recalled the constitutional conference held during the military era under General Sani Abacha, where he led a group that opposed the inclusion of rotational presidency in the constitution.

He said the proposal, championed by the late former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, was rejected at the time because his group had majority support among delegates.

According to him, Ekwueme later acknowledged that the decision may not have been ideal during his funeral years later. Atiku added that he now believes a rotational system, if adopted earlier, could have ensured a more balanced distribution of power across Nigeria’s regions.
