ASUU Urges Nigerian Government To Honor Agreements To Prevent Industrial Unrest

KANO, May 24, 2024 – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano zone, has implored the Federal Government to fulfill all outstanding agreements and memoranda signed with the union to ensure industrial harmony in the nation’s higher education sector……CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Abdulqadir Muhammad, the Zonal Coordinator, made this appeal during a press briefing following a zonal meeting of the seven universities in the Kano zone held on Thursday.

Muhammad highlighted several critical issues, including the renegotiation of the Federal Government-ASUU 2009 agreement, funding for the revitalization of public universities, and respect for university autonomy. He stressed that the failure to sign the draft renegotiated agreement has led to widespread dissatisfaction and declining morale among ASUU members, contributing to a severe brain drain.

“ASUU Kano zone calls on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to respect the provisions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, to which Nigeria is a signatory,” Muhammad stated.

The union also demanded the release of funds for the payment of salary arrears, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and withheld salaries. Furthermore, ASUU emphasized the need for the Kano State Government to immediately reinstate the arbitrarily dissolved governing councils of the two state-owned universities.

Additionally, ASUU called on state governments to follow the presidential directive resulting from a court ruling to exempt tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and to cease the illegal enrollment of their members into related platforms.

Muhammad warned that the government’s failure to address these issues promptly could lead to renewed industrial action, disrupting academic activities and further deteriorating the state of Nigeria’s public universities.

The union’s demands reflect ongoing concerns about the state of higher education in Nigeria and the need for the government to honor its commitments to ensure a stable and conducive learning environment.
