According to a statement by the Command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the masquerade, known as Oriokpa, was intercepted and apprehended on May 12, 2024, around 3:45 p.m. by operatives of the Nsukka Sector of the Command’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad. The masquerader was reportedly physically assaulting a female victim at Ugwuoye Junction, Nsukka, at the time of arrest.
Identified as Ugwuoke Ebube, aged 22, the masquerader was arraigned in court on Wednesday in Nsukka, and subsequently granted bail.
DSP Ndukwe explained that investigations conducted by the command revealed that the suspect was part of a group of masqueraders involved in a similar assault on a female nurse riding a motorcycle, as depicted in a viral video from April 2024.
Ndukwe confirmed that Ugwuoke Ebube was arraigned in the Nsukka Magistrate Court on May 22, 2024, and was granted bail by the court.
State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, condemned the act and warned individuals intending to exploit cultural masquerades as a cover for criminal activities to cease such actions immediately. He emphasized that the police will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone found engaging in criminal behavior under the guise of cultural celebrations.
