Barau emphasized that this initiative responds to an urgent call from the President of the ECOWAS Commission, who highlighted the necessity of parliamentary intervention to address critical issues within the community. The aim is to prevent the potential disintegration of the regional bloc due to the departures of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
Barau stated, “We must heed to that call with all seriousness and be intentional about playing our roles for the millions of citizens being impacted by these conflicts. Against this backdrop, I will, in consultation with my colleagues on the Bureau, be proposing the appointment of an Ad hoc Mediation Committee whose mandate will be to work with all stakeholders in getting our brothers to rescind their decision and come home and work towards promoting dialogue with a view to resolving conflicts in the region.”
He underscored that unity within ECOWAS is crucial for regional stability and development, noting, “It’s no doubt that we are stronger together and there is absolutely no alternative to our collective aspirations of a united, peaceful and secure ECOWAS.”
Additionally, Barau mentioned a Parliamentary Fact-finding mission to the Republic of Togo aimed at understanding the absence of the Togolese delegation. The mission held discussions with national stakeholders on political issues, receiving assurances from Togolese authorities about the imminent inauguration of their delegation.
Barau further stressed the importance of strong collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission and other regional parliaments to enhance regional security and promote development. He reiterated the Parliament’s commitment to fostering synergy with Community Institutions and Regional Parliaments to achieve shared goals.
This initiative reflects ECOWAS’s dedication to resolving internal conflicts and maintaining cohesion within the West African sub-region.
