In a tragic incident, bandits have reportedly killed over 40 individuals, including vigilantes, during an attack on Zurak village in Bashar District of Wase local government area in Plateau State. Due to the poor communication network in the area, residents were unable to immediately report the incident. Sahpi’i Sambo, a youth leader in the area, provided an account to Daily Trust, describing how the bandits arrived on motorcycles armed with sophisticated weapons and began shooting indiscriminately. “More than 40 people were killed while many were injured. Residents of the village have fled to neighbouring communities for cover. As of yesterday, security personnel had not yet arrived at the community. It was deadly,” Sambo said.
At the time of reporting, DSP Alabo Alfred, the spokesperson for the state police command, had not yet issued a statement on the incident.

In another related incident, at least 20 individuals were abducted by gunmen dressed in military uniforms in the Dawaki community of Abuja. Witnesses described the attackers using various terms, including bandits, armed robbers, and terrorists, indicating a severe security breach.
Dawaki, located along the Abuja-Kubwa Expressway across from Gwarinpa Estate, is home to thousands of workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The gunmen, armed with a range of weapons, stormed Dawaki around 7:30 pm on Sunday and continued their operation until about 8:30 pm.
These incidents underscore the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the affected regions to protect lives and properties from such violent attacks.

Background on Conviction
Bolarinwa has been serving a prison sentence following his initial remand in April 2022 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He was arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja on a 13-count charge encompassing forgery, possession of false documents, and obtaining money by false pretences amounting to ₦266.5 million.

The EFCC stated that Bolarinwa deceived Kodef Clearing Resources Limited by posing as a military general and claiming that former President Muhammadu Buhari had shortlisted him for appointment as Chief of Army Staff, extracting large sums to “facilitate” the role.

Investigators also recovered forged appointment letters, military identification cards, recommendations bearing former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s name, and several firearms from his Alagbado residence.

Although he initially pleaded not guilty, Bolarinwa changed his plea to “guilty” during court proceedings on July 7, 2022.

Justice Taiwo convicted him on all 13 counts, sentencing him to seven years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine, ordering asset forfeitures, and directing him to pay ₦20 million in restitution.
