NLC Stands Firm on Higher Minimum Wage, Threatens Industrial Action
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared that it would rather mobilize workers for industrial action or offer their services for free than accept the proposed ₦48,000 minimum wage. In an interview with Punch Newspaper on Sunday, the Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, asserted that the labor union would not relent until a more substantial offer is made…….CONTINUE READING
According to Naija News, Prof. Ndubuaku criticized the Federal Government (FG) and state governors for making excuses despite significant budget increases, arguing that the proposed wage does not reflect the economic realities faced by workers.
“We have given the FG an ultimatum. If the new minimum wage is not announced by the end of this month, we will all go and sit at home. Instead of accepting ₦48,000 per month, we will tell workers to work for free for the government or turn to artisanal work. That is where we are now,” Ndubuaku stated.
He expressed disbelief at the government’s decision-making process, questioning whether the proposed wage was intended as a palliative. Ndubuaku highlighted that even the National Bureau of Statistics reported that the average cost of foodstuffs is ₦900, which starkly contrasts with the proposed minimum wage.
“It seems like the government is either living in denial or simply wants to insult us. We have provided them with a breakdown of what a realistic minimum wage should look like,” he added.
The NLC is anticipating a robust discussion on Tuesday, aiming for a comprehensive plan that addresses food security, transportation subsidies, health insurance, and other critical issues. Ndubuaku emphasized that genuine “Renewed Hope” requires concrete plans and actions that align with the people’s needs and expectations.
The labor union’s stance underscores the ongoing tension and the urgent need for a revised minimum wage that ensures a decent standard of living for Nigerian workers.
