New Traditional Rulers Emerge In Abia State After Elections

In a bid to restore peace and stability in various communities of Abia State, the Abia State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs conducted an election to choose new traditional rulers. Ndukwe Ikoh was elected unopposed after three other contestants stepped down, underscoring the support of his people. Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, emphasized that the election aimed to address petitions and allegations surrounding the previous nomination process. He assured that all parties were involved in ensuring a smooth electoral process.

Chairman of Ohafia LGA, David Ogba Onuoha, described the election as seamless, affirming the credibility of the process. The newly elected Eze-elect, Ndukwe Ikoh, expressed gratitude for the victory and pledged to work towards the development of his community.

In Ukwa East LGA, Daniel Nwauzor secured victory as the new traditional ruler of Akwaete Umuihueze autonomous community, garnering nine votes against his opponent, Enyinnaya Ogbulu, who received one vote. Commissioner Nwachukwu reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring peace in communities experiencing traditional rulership crises.

Chris Nkwonta, the representative of Ukwa East and West Federal constituency, highlighted the significance of Nwauzor’s emergence after a prolonged period without a traditional ruler in the community. Nwauzor, in his address, pledged to prioritize peace and development in his community, promising to serve with diligence and commitment.

Abaushwa is the hometown of the immediate past governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom.

Dr. Frank Kyungun, a prominent indigene who visited the scene with the former governor, stated that the attack was carried out by armed herdsmen. He emphasized that the community had been making efforts to avoid conflict, including voluntarily refraining from consuming beef, yet they continue to be targeted.

The Chairman of Guma LGA, Morris Orwough, has called for calm, noting that security personnel have been deployed to the area to restore peace and prevent further violence.

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the incident.
