The impending strike by labor unions at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has been put on hold, according to an announcement made through their official channels…..CONTINUE READING
Scheduled for Monday, May 20, 2024, the strike was prompted by unresolved issues regarding 45 months of minimum wage arrears and consequential adjustments for NiMet staff. Aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employee Association of Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations and Technical and Recreational Employees, had instructed NiMet employees to declare their intention to strike.
In response to the grievances, Nasiru Sani, NiMet’s Director of Human Resources, stated, “The issue of the unpaid 42-month consequential salary adjustment by the Federal Government predates the present NiMet management.” However, he assured that NiMet management was actively engaging with the unions and government agencies to resolve the outstanding payments.
Following discussions between NiMet and the labor unions facilitated by the House Committee on Aviation and Technology, an agreement was reached, leading to the suspension of the planned strike action.
NiMet released a statement affirming, “Labour Unions in the Nigerian Meteorological Agency have suspended the planned strike action scheduled to begin on Monday, May 20th, 2024. This followed an agreement reached today, Sunday, 19th May 2024, during a special session convened by the House Committee on Aviation and Technology.”
