Iranian state television confirmed the incident but did not provide details on whether President Raisi was on board at the time. The crash happened amid poor weather conditions, with heavy rain and strong winds reported in the area. Rescuers are currently making efforts to reach the crash site despite these challenging conditions.

President Raisi was in Azerbaijan for the inauguration of a dam, a significant joint project between Iran and Azerbaijan on the Aras River. This event marks the third such collaboration between the two nations.

Iran’s diverse helicopter fleet faces difficulties in maintenance and spare parts acquisition due to international sanctions, with many aircraft dating back to before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Raisi, 63, known for his hard-line views, previously served as the head of Iran’s judiciary. He is considered a protege of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, leading some to speculate he may be a potential successor to the 85-year-old leader.

This incident underscores the risks faced by high-ranking officials and highlights ongoing challenges within Iran’s aviation sector due to longstanding international sanctions.

Despite the positive financial outlook and a return to Champions League football under manager Michael Carrick, the team has faced a rocky start to the new Premier League campaign, picking up five points from their first five matches and exiting the English League Cup.
