NJC Proposes Promotions for High-Profile Judges
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the promotion of Justice Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, the wife of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to the Court of Appeal. Among those recommended are Justices Nnamdi Dimgba and Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court, and Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the FCT High Court. Additionally, Oluwakemi Victoria Ariwoola, daughter-in-law of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Olukayode Ariwoola, and Lesley Nkesi Belema-Wike, an in-law of the FCT Minister, are included in the list of 12 judges set for elevation to the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Justice Suzzette Nyesom-Wike and Justice Oluwakemi Victoria Ariwoola are part of the 86 judges recommended by the Interview Committee on the Appointment of Judicial Officers for all Superior Courts of Record in Nigeria.
The NJC’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, May 16, 2024. The recommendations were made during the NJC’s 105th plenary meeting, held on May 15 and 16, 2024.
“All recommended candidates are expected to be sworn in after the approval of the NJC recommendations to the President and their respective State Governors,” Oye stated.
Furthermore, Oye noted that the NJC reviewed reports from its two Preliminary Complaints Assessment Committees, which had screened 35 petitions against judges of the Federal and State High Courts. The Council decided to form eight committees to further investigate the petitions deemed meritorious by the initial assessment.
