Onyejiuwa, the Managing Director of Resource Computer Limited, testified before the Lagos State Special Offences Court that he had no direct dealings with Emefiele and that all communication regarding the bribe payment was conducted with Ayoh via WhatsApp.

According to Onyejiuwa, he succumbed to pressure from Ayoh, who informed him that his payment for the contract would not be approved unless he paid certain sums. Despite not receiving any official authorization from CBN management to pay a bribe, Onyejiuwa made two payments of $400,000 and $200,000 to Ayoh, with the latter allegedly signing off on the award and completion of the contract.

Under cross-examination, Onyejiuwa clarified that he had never met Emefiele in person and that his dealings with CBN management were exclusively through Ayoh. He also admitted to not having any direct instructions from Emefiele regarding the contract or the bribe payment.

The witness further revealed that no bribe was demanded from him for contracts executed after Ayoh left the CBN, and payments were made promptly. He emphasized that the contracts were executed while Emefiele was still serving as the governor of the CBN.

During cross-examination, Onyejiuwa stated that he did not show the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) any letter demanding a bribe and confirmed that the money was delivered to Ayoh’s office, with an IT department official signing off on the payment.

Emefiele and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, are facing trial on multiple counts of abuse of office and alleged fraud amounting to $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The case has been adjourned until July 9th and 10th for further proceedings.

Ufochukwu also noted that her agenda extends beyond trade, including the promotion of Nigeria’s culture, agriculture, and investment opportunities, as well as supporting training programmes in cybersecurity and information technology.

She assured stakeholders of her commitment to fully delivering on her responsibilities, adding that sustained communication and cooperation would be important in achieving set goals.

Participants at the forum highlighted the need for Nigeria to address structural barriers affecting business growth, while pointing to Israel’s innovation-driven economy as a model worth studying.
