Coalition Of Aba North Ethnic Youth Groups Calls For Action On Vacant Assembly Seat
The Coalition of Aba North Ethnic Youth Groups has issued an ultimatum to the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emereuwa, demanding that the Aba North Assembly seat be declared vacant within seven days. This demand follows a prolonged controversy since November 27, 2023, when the Court of Appeal in Lagos annulled the election of Destiny Nwagwu of the Labour Party (LP) and declared Aaron Uzodike of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the rightful winner……..CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Despite this ruling, the seat has remained unoccupied, as Uzodike has not been inaugurated by the Speaker, despite his persistent appeals.
The Coalition, in a statement issued on Friday, warned that failure to declare the seat vacant would result in a city-wide protest in Aba. The protest letter, signed by the group’s leader Uka Matthew and other members, emphasized that the constituency has been without representation in the Abia State House of Assembly for six months, leaving them voiceless in legislative matters.
The Coalition maintains that the March 18, 2024, House of Assembly election was won by Destiny Nwagwu of LP, contesting Uzodike’s appeal court victory. They argue that Uzodike, who they claim lost even in his polling unit, should not be allowed to represent them.
“We are calling on our brother, the Speaker, to do the needful and declare the Aba North State constituency seat vacant so that INEC can conduct a fresh election. We voted for Destiny Nwagwu; we cannot allow Aaron, who lost even in his polling unit, to represent us,” stated Uka Matthew.
Last month, a group of traditional rulers from the Aba North constituency made a similar demand, urging the Speaker to declare the seat vacant and citing Uzodike’s alleged ill health. However, Uzodike refuted these claims in April, asserting that he is healthy and ready to serve his constituency if sworn in. He also accused the traditional rulers of being imposters hired from other constituencies.
