The incident, which occurred at the cottage hospital in Iloffa last Sunday, has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting swift action from law enforcement authorities.
The suspects, identified as Dr. Ajibola and nurses Rukayat Adeloye, Aishat Awolusi, Peace Alabi, and Toyin Adewunmi, a ward attendant, are currently in custody in Ilorin following interrogation.
According to reports from Daily Trust, the disappearance of the placenta and umbilical cord sparked outrage among locals, with efforts from elders of the Odo-Owa community needed to prevent potential unrest.
Narrating her ordeal, Mrs. C.B Williams, the mother of the newborn and an English language teacher at Orofa High School, Odo-Owa, expressed her dismay at the failure of the medical staff to account for the missing placenta and umbilical cord.
“The attendant said she had thrown the placenta inside a pit but they could not find it suggesting a dog might have eaten it,” Mrs. Williams recounted, adding that she refused to accept this explanation and demanded answers from the hospital staff.
In response to inquiries about the incident, spokesperson Ejire-Adeyemi Toun confirmed that the police command has initiated a discreet investigation into the matter.
The disappearance of the newborn’s placenta has raised serious concerns about the conduct of health workers and the safety protocols in place at the hospital. As the investigation unfolds, the community awaits answers and justice for the aggrieved family.
