Government Assures Safety Of N20tn Pension Fund Amid Public Concerns
In response to growing public concern, the Nigerian government has reassured citizens that the nation’s N20 trillion pension fund remains secure and protected. This statement was issued by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, following heightened scrutiny from labor unions and the public……CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The anxiety began after Minister Edun’s remarks at last Tuesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting, where he hinted at a government initiative to leverage local funds for infrastructure development. This proposal was met with immediate resistance from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), which cautioned against using the pension funds for such purposes.
In a robust rebuttal, NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC Deputy President Tommy Okon released a joint statement expressing their concerns. They emphasized that “Nigerian workers have entrusted their hard-earned savings for retirement security, not as a means for government projects.” The unions insisted that the government’s previous borrowing practices lacked the transparency and accountability necessary to justify tapping into pension funds.
Minister Edun addressed these concerns directly, denying any plans to borrow from the pension fund. He emphasized that the pension industry operates under stringent regulations designed to protect workers’ savings. “There are rules and limitations about what pension money can be invested in and what it cannot be invested in,” Edun stated. “The Federal Government has no intention of going beyond those limitations and bounds, which are there to safeguard workers’ pensions.”
Edun further clarified that the government’s initiative involves a collaborative effort with major stakeholders in the long-term savings industry. The goal is to explore how these funds, within the legal and regulatory frameworks, can be utilized to drive investment in critical growth areas.
This assurance aims to quell the fears and reassure pensioners and workers that their funds will not be misused. The government’s commitment to adhering to strict regulatory frameworks seeks to restore trust and ensure the continued security of the pension fund.
