Ndume Remarks On Corruption: Politicians’ Misdeeds ‘Small’ Compared To Others
Chief Whip of the Senate, Ali Ndume, has stirred controversy by asserting that corruption within Nigerian politics is relatively minor and should not warrant severe punishment. Ndume made these remarks while discussing the death penalty as a deterrent for drug-related offenses.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During an appearance on Channels Television, Ndume candidly acknowledged that politicians engage in corrupt practices but justified it by claiming they share the spoils with the populace.
He argued that when compared to other forms of corruption, such as embezzlement by officials in other sectors, political corruption pales in comparison. According to him, politicians’ corruption is “people-driven” because stolen funds are distributed among the populace to secure political support.
Ndume went on to express conditional support for the death penalty in cases of extreme corruption, suggesting that individuals who embezzle trillions of government funds should face capital punishment. However, he clarified that he does not advocate for the death penalty for those who steal smaller amounts.
While Ndume endorsed the death penalty for drug dealers, he emphasized the devastating impact of drug abuse on society, equating it to murder due to the lives it destroys.
These remarks by the senator have ignited debate over the severity of punishment for corruption in Nigeria, with some criticizing his views while others express agreement with his stance on drug-related offenses.
