CNG, a fuel gas stored under pressure, offers a clear, odourless, and non-corrosive alternative to traditional petrol. Nagendra Verma Gas, Managing Director of NIPCO, disclosed that AutoGas for cars, taxis, and tricycles will be sold at approximately ₦200 per standard cubic foot, while for heavy commercial vehicles, CNG will be priced at ₦260 per standard cubic meter (SCM).
Engr Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive of NMDPRA, emphasized the necessity for filling stations to enhance accessibility to CNG for consumers. He announced that new applications for retail licenses would not be approved without provisions for CNG points.
Ahmed described the government’s initiative to promote CNG usage as a revolution, aligning with the President’s goal of transitioning the nation away from heavy dependence on petrol. He highlighted ongoing collaborations with producing companies, regulatory agencies, and industry stakeholders to ensure competitive pricing and availability of CNG to consumers.
Furthermore, Ahmed outlined plans to mandate the inclusion of CNG add-ons in petrol stations, with existing stations urged to invest in this initiative. He emphasized that CNG points of sale must be readily accessible to consumers, indicating that compliance with CNG requirements would be a prerequisite for new filling station applications.
The directive underscores the government’s commitment to diversifying Nigeria’s energy sources and reducing reliance on traditional petroleum products.
