Shell Facility Fire Raises Concerns Of Gas Price Surge In Nigeria
The recent inferno at Shell’s Gbaran facility in Bayelsa has ignited fears of an impending surge in gas prices across Nigeria. The blaze, which erupted on Tuesday, has cast a shadow over the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) market, already grappling with escalating costs.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Gbaran facility, a linchpin in Nigeria’s LNG infrastructure, processes a staggering 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas daily. While Shell has assured that the incident won’t immediately halt operations, concerns linger over its potential ramifications.
Shell has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, collaborating closely with regulatory bodies to ensure community safety. However, the timing couldn’t be worse, with gas prices already on an upward trajectory.
Earlier in April, the Nigerian government hiked wholesale gas prices by 11%, exacerbating the financial strain on industries reliant on LNG. This move has inevitably cascaded into higher costs for consumers, particularly in the cooking gas sector.
The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a vital commodity for households across Nigeria, has soared by nearly 47% annually. Despite governmental efforts such as VAT waivers on product imports, the price surge persists, underscoring the urgency for decisive action.
Oil and gas experts, like Barr Ameh Madaki, advocate for radical measures to stabilize prices. Madaki emphasizes the need to curtail LNG and LPG exports, redirecting resources to domestic consumption. Such a move, he argues, would not only alleviate pricing pressures but also address environmental concerns like gas flaring.
As Nigeria navigates these challenges, the specter of rising gas prices looms large, underscoring the imperative for strategic interventions to safeguard both economic stability and public welfare.
