Obaseki Initiates Peace Talks Between Palace And Enigie In Edo State
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has taken steps to mediate between His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolopkolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, and some suspended Enigie (dukes) in the state. Obaseki emphasized the importance of resolving the existing court case between the Enigie and the palace to promote peace and unity in Edo South. He condemned attempts by politicians to exploit and distort the issue, urging caution in handling matters concerning the Benin Royalty, which he described as a unique heritage that must be preserved.

During the meeting, the governor sought to grasp the grievances of the aggrieved parties, expressing his commitment to resolving the issues amicably. He highlighted the familial relationship between the Enigie and the Palace, stressing the need for unity and cooperation.

Governor Obaseki pledged to visit the lyase of Benin Kingdom and subsequently meet with the Oba of Benin to further facilitate the peace-building process.

In response, the Enogie of Evbo-Obanosa, Prof. Gregory Akenzua, appreciated Governor Obaseki’s intervention and clarified that the decision to pursue legal action was not influenced by the governor. He emphasized that the issues between the Enigie and the traditional institution must be addressed for a lasting resolution to be achieved.

Akenzua underscored the importance of addressing the underlying concerns before considering an out-of-court settlement, asserting that the issues at hand require careful examination and resolution.

He also approved an amendment extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to ensure completion of ongoing capital projects nationwide.
