Obasanjo Criticizes Adoption Of Western Liberal Democracy In Africa
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticized African countries for adopting Western liberal democracy introduced by Europeans, stating that it is not synchronized with the continent’s value system. Obasanjo emphasized that Western liberal democracy is a product of European history, culture, and way of life. He pointed out that the concept of “loyal opposition” in Western democracies contrasts with African languages, where opposition often translates to “enemy.”
Highlighting Africa’s pre-colonial history of self-rule through empires and kingdoms, Obasanjo questioned the relevance of liberal democracy to the continent. He suggested the need for African countries to develop a form of democracy that aligns with their cultural and historical contexts.
The former president proposed the term “afro-democracy” to denote a democratic system tailored to African societies. He urged African nations to rethink their approach to governance and explore models that resonate with their indigenous systems of governance.
Obasanjo’s critique underscores ongoing debates about the applicability of Western political frameworks in African contexts and the importance of indigenous governance systems in shaping the continent’s democratic future.
